These figures and portraits explore individuals living with and through various life challenges. Some of these challenges are states we all experience at one time or another: grief, indecision or loneliness. Some other situations, like Autism or Diabetes are less common. My intent is to portray these uniquely human experiences with candor in order to build awareness and connection.
The process for these works incorporates accumulated artifacts relating to the situation portrayed. These artifacts may be original photos or text from interviews, medical or financial data or other relevant materials. These are painted on directly or combined with mylar to create an image in which the artifacts are visible beneath the translucent painting surface. The combination of alphanumeric documents, original and found imagery and the representational figurative painting suggest layers of individual experience with the layering of the materials.
